Matt Barrows, a 49ers beat reporter for the Sacramento Bee, posted an official statement from the team:
The San Francisco 49ers are aware that Aldon Smith incurred minor injuries during an incident last night. We are in contact with Aldon, and thankful that his injuries were not more serious and that he is recovering comfortably. The 49ers are also in communication with local authorities as they gather information regarding the incident, and will reserve further comment at this time.
Barrow’s post on the Sacramento Bee 49ers’ blog notes that the incident occurred in Santa Clara County, which is south of the Bay Area, and that local sheriffs are investigating the incident.
Smith was the seventh overall pick in 2011 out of Missouri and had a fantastic rookie season for the Niners.
He featured as an outside linebacker in the team’s 3-4 defense and recorded 14 sacks and 37 tackles, earning Defensive Rookie of the Year Honors.
He was an instrumental part to the record-setting 49ers defense, which did not allow a rushing touchdown for the first 14 games of the season. The team had far and away the best run defense in the league, allowing just 77.3 yards per game on the ground.
Smith is a remarkable talent who will hopefully recover from his injuries without any complications.
